What Will Happen To SEO In An Age Of Twitter?

>>

Twitter has created quite a stir. Many Internet marketers are content to treat it like other methods of social media marketing. But Twitter isn’t Facebook or LinkedIn. Is it its own animal and is like no other. And only a fool would consider a real search engine optimization tool.

While one can perform some limited optimization related functions through Twitter, there is much that cannot be done and likely will never be available to SEOs and webmasters looking for an alternative to spam.

Twitter is a powerful tool, to be sure. Many SEO experts don’t even understand it and try to stear clear altogether. Others swear by it. But I suspect that most use it to one degree or another while continuing to build their authorities, and that of their clients, through more traditional means. Twitter is definitely a “different strokes for different folks” kind of tool.

But what will happen to SEO?

Clearly, Twitter has not evolved to its maximum capabilities. It will likely continue to change and morph into something that will not only make its founders a lot of money but will benefit a large swath of Internet users, for both personal and business reasons. Will it change SEO?

I think, on a fundamental level, Twitter won’t change SEO much. It will, and already has, change how Internet marketers approach the overall positioning of their brands and products. Savvy marketers will learn how to incorporate Twitter into what they are already doing. Those who won’t, or can’t, see its potential will just have to stand on the sidelines and watch.
